Our prayers in relation to the rosary are based on the Scriptures. On the first bead we pray the “Our Father”, sometimes referred to as the Lord’s Prayer. This prayer, too, is from the Gospels. (See Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4)<\/p>\n
On the next three beads, we recite the prayer known as the “Hail Mary.” This particular prayer is from the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary concerning the birth of Christ, along with Elizabeth’s greeting.<\/p>\n
The Mysteries of the Rosary help us to focus our attention on the various events of the life of Christ. There are four in all, which include: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and the Luminous. The fourth mystery was added by Pope St. John Paul II in 2002.<\/p>\n
On the next bead we say the “Glory Be,” before moving to the next ten beads. <\/p>\n
Before each decade (a set of ten beads), we reflect upon one of the Mysteries, also praying the Our Father. On each of the ten beads we recite the Hail Mary.<\/p>\n
After reciting a decade, some also recite the following prayer which was requested by the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima: <\/p>\n

Some also recite the following prayer to St. Joseph. Pope Leo XIII introduced this prayer in his 1889 encyclical, Quamquam Pluries<\/em>. He requested that the prayer be added at the conclusion of the Rosary, especially during the month of October.
